Abstract
Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is one of the most significant causes of pipeline, tank, and process equipment degradation in the energy and petrochemical industries.
Due to its hidden nature, CUI is often detected only at an advanced stage when severe damage has already occurred. This paper analyses the mechanisms of CUI formation, environmental and operational influences, and limitations of traditional protection systems.
An integrated approach to CUI prevention is presented, combining steel protection, moisture control within insulation, and long-term sealing of the cladding system.
Practical case examples and the role of corrosion monitoring technologies are also discussed. The systematic approach enables extended service life, reduced maintenance costs, and improved operational safety.
